Frequently Asked Questions
ORTHOWHAT? WHAT IS ORTHODONTICS?
Orthodontics is a special field of dentistry that focuses on establishing an alignment of teeth and jaws in keeping with a balanced facial pattern. Treatment is aimed at improving healthy, stable teeth, and providing a pleasing appearance. In growing children, before the eruption of all permanent teeth, interceptive care may alleviate many orthodontic problems. For example, it is during this period when concerns associated with developing crowding, undesirable habits, and disproportionate jaw growth may first need to be addressed. Other problems associated with tooth alignment or bite correction may best be managed following the eruption of most permanent teeth.
Malocclusions, or abnormal bites, are usually derived from interaction between inherited traits (i.e. facial patterns, tooth size and shape) and environmental influences. Because of the multiple factors causing a malocclusion and the need for proper timing of corrective measures, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have an orthodontic evaluation by 7 years of age. Special problems may require an even earlier evaluation.
WHY ME? WHO NEEDS ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Most patients and parents seek orthodontic treatment because of aesthetic concerns about visible dental irregularities. But an attractive smile is only the most obvious reason for orthodontics. Properly aligned teeth may help in the prevention of dental disease, gum disease, uneven wear of the teeth, and jaw problems. Speech difficulties may improve and digestion is enhanced with properly aligned teeth.
Orthodontics now focuses on patients of many ages. New treatment techniques provide significant benefits for patients as young as 3 year old. Early treatment during periods of rapid facial growth can simplify and even eliminate additional treatment.
Full orthodontic treatment with braces is most commonly initiated at 12 to 13 years of age, after most of the permanent teeth are in place. These teeth can be moved to their proper positions and facial skeletal growth can be encouraged or inhibited.
Adults now account for nearly 30% of all our patients. Today's less noticeable braces have contributed to this increase in popularity. New techniques and materials now allow extended intervals between orthodontic appointments making the treatment more convenient than ever. Adults of all ages, including those enjoying their retirement years, can fully appreciate the return on an orthodontic investment: a great smile, improved self-confidence, and better dental health.
HEY, DO I GET TO MISS A LOT OF SCHOOL OR WORK?
The first one or two appointments usually require one to two hours for appliances to be made, placed onto the teeth, and any explanations and instructions given. All such appointments are scheduled as early in the morning or early afternoon as possible. For our student patients we give after school appointments when possible. However, these appointments must be limited to the procedures that take a minimum of time. Only in this way can we see a maximum number of patients during after-school hours.
We make an effort to schedule school-hour appointments at the least disruptive time for the student. We also provide an initial letter for the teacher or school administrator explaining the necessity of missing school. A timed and dated pass is available for students to return to school. We have found that school officials are most cooperative and wish to help promote the student's dental health.
